(portrayed by Peter Ho) – 23 years old. 

            Yin Tong is a gifted student who graduated from the Department of Architecture from a university.  He has a cheerful and frank personality and often reveals the mischievous nature of a child.  Somehow, when Yang Xin sees him for the first time at the new architect convention, she felt that Yin Tong seems to give off a different feeling.  It felt like arrogance and also felt like resentment coming from Yin Tong.

            No matter what, Yang Xin was completely fascinated by Yin Tong.  As for Yin Tong, he was very quickly attracted to Yang Xin by her bright enthusiasm and they were both gradually pulled toward each other.

            However, when Yin Tong’s designs were plagiarize by another person, and he received 2^nd place in the design convention, all the resentment that he feels erupts.  Yang Xin was concerned and confused.  She didn’t know how to comfort him because she didn’t understand that Yin Tong’s arrogance and anger was actually directed towards himself.  The pear garden from his childhood is still locked away in the deepest corner of his heart… 

            Yin Tong’s parents were young when they went to the countryside.  Since childhood, Yin Tong has witnessed his father using his youth and hands to irrigate the pear garden and witnessed his father’s ideals along with his pears being abandoned by the people around.  Yin Tong felt bad for his father and yet still hates him even more.  All for the mere reason of having his mother’s dejected figure leaving, when he was 4 years old, forever etched in his mind.  He believes his mother’s parting is the result of his father’s obsession with the pear garden.  After graduating from high school, Yin Tong’s resentment that he has kept silent for many years finally erupts.  Father and son gets into an argument and a rift is driven between their relationship.  Yin Tong angrily leaves home and goes to the city to study and refuses to step foot back in the pear garden again.  This incident causes him to imprison his feelings in the deepest part of his heart and does not dare to allow it to be touched.

            Only Yang Lan understands the confusion and uneasiness within Yin Tong’s heart.  Yang Lan is Yang Xin’s elder sister.  She gets acquainted with Lao Yin because she was infatuated with Lao Yin’s pear garden.  From him she learns all sorts of things about Yin Tong and she gradually starts liking this boy.  However, when she sees Yin Tong, he turns out to be the guy that her younger sister is in love with.  Yang Lan immediately gathers up the feelings that she has for Yin Tong and helps her sister to pursue him.  Yet at this time, Yin Tong gradually discovers that he is not attracted to Yang Xin because of her brightness.  He was attracted to her gentle nature but this trait really doesn’t come from Yang Xin.  In any case, he has discovered Yang Lan’s existence.

            This being the case, Yin Tong is at a loss.  A pair of sisters who each displays their respective radiance.  The younger sister is like the sun and the elder sister is like the moon.

            What is even more disturbing for Yin Tong is that the sisters’ father, Yang Shi Rong, who manages the Ba Fang Group, has invited him to design a new development plan.  The target for this new development plan turns out to be the piece of land where Lao Yin’s pear garden is located.

            Until one day, he finally finds out Lao Yin, who has raised him for 20 more years, is not his biological father.  Moreover, Lao Yin has always loved Yin Tong’s mother Tong Lei.  Yet Tong Lei has never loved Lao Yin and that is the reason why she left many years ago.

            Yin Tong finally understands his father’s sorrows and also understands that he has wrongly accused his father all these years.  What is even more shocking to Yin Tong is that in order for him to smoothly complete his plan, Lao Yin secretly contacts the development company and promises to give up the pear garden.  Yin Tong’s mind becomes totally blank and on that stormy night, he rushes back to the pear garden.  He sees his father using his elderly body shielding and protecting the pear tree.  He couldn’t help from crying out loud and at this time, he once again calls out “father!”

            Just like that Yin Tong wakens up.  He gathers up his arrogance from the past and becomes even more persistent.  He hands in his resignation letter and taking Yang Lan from Hong Lou, they both escape from this place and returns to the pear garden.  Aside from helping his father with improving the pear trees, he also built a white house within the pear garden.  Because the house is as white as the pear flowers, he wanted Yang Lan’s brightness to be in this white house forever!

            Yang Lan and Yang Xin are the daughters of the Chairman of Ba Fang Development Group.  A pair of sisters with different fathers and mothers.  Most of the staff of the company has only seen the lively and bright younger sister, Yang Xin.  As for Yang Lan, it is said that she is as bright and gentle as the moon but she is hardly ever seen.

            Yang Lan used to be a lively and carefree girl.  She has liked being outdoors and with nature since she was a child.  Until the day she fell down from a tree while trying to save her younger sister, Yang Xin.  Although she wasn’t seriously hurt, but after being examined, it was found out that she has leukemia.  From then on, she was settled at the Hong Lou Villa to recuperate and very rarely leaves the place.  Although she has lost her freedom, but she is still as carefree as before.  The only difference is that she is more delicate and gentle now.  The housekeeper, Zhang Sao, always smiles and says that Yang Lan is like a fairy in the forest - smart and nimble yet afraid of the light.

            The forest that Zhang Sao talks about is actually the piece of land that Lao Yin has his pear garden on.  Yang Lan just happens to discover this place when she went out for a walk one time.  She was immediately captivated by this white as snow scene.  After that, with Zhang Sao’s help, Yang Lan secretly goes to the pear garden every day to help out under the pretense of taking a walk.  She becomes Lao Yin’s assistant and helps with spreading out the fertilizer, pollination and the rest of the gardening chores.  Lao Yin hopes for the fruit but what Yang Lan loves are the flowers.  Because she knows that her life is short, she hopes that she can be like the pear flower – even though the flowering season is short but it is bright and glittering. 

            Through her interaction with Lao Yin, Yang Lan finds out a lot of things about Yin Tong.  Although the relationship of this father and son is on bad terms but the feelings within are still strong.  This discovery deeply touches Yang Lan.  She believes that one day the boy will return to the pear garden and at that time, she will try her best to make father and son reconcile their differences.  From this, the pear garden gives Yang Lan another attractive meaning.  She gradually starts to like this boy whom she has never laid eyes on.  However, the first time that she sees Yin Tong, he turns out to be the guy that Yang Xin is in love with.  Aside from being scared, Yang Lan decides to hide her own feelings and help her sister to pursue Yin Tong.  Yet she never expected that the more she helps Yang Xin, the more Yin Tong becomes aware of Yang Lan’s existence.  Not being able to avoid each other, they finally meet.

            After Yang Xin finds out the truth, she yelled and screamed but very quickly calmed down.  It is because she knows that her elder sister’s life is like that of the pear flower and only lasts 3 months.  Yang Lan always hoped to bloom and glitter brightly and Yin Tong is precisely Yang Lan’s brightness.  As a result, Yang Xin lets go and is determined to help her sister.  However, this forces Yang Lan to face the deepest gloom in her heart – after this short brightness in her life disappears, wouldn’t she be leaving Yin Tong with limitless grief and sorrow?

            Yang Lan backs away but she never expected that Yin Tong’s determination for a love with no regrets is actually stronger than she imagined.  Not only does he want the pear flower to bloom every March, but he also wants her to conquer the changes in the seasons.  He wants her brightness to be in this white house forever.  As a result, Yang Lan conquers the fear that she has within her heart and gives herself to Yin Tong.

            Yang Lan believes that she has experienced the brightest blooming season in her life.  Thus when she turns her head to look out her window at the withering pear flower, although the tears are falling, but she is also smiling…

Yang Xin is Yang Lan’s younger sister from a different father and mother.  Since she was a child, she has liked to follow Yang Lan around.  Until Yang Lan has her freedom restricted from leukemia, only then did Yang Xin slowly learn to become independent. 

Although Yang Lan’s misfortune has nothing to do with Yang Xin but Yang Xin still feels responsible in her heart.  Yang Xin wants to keep her sister company, but Yang Lan won’t allow it and encourages her to venture outside and take a look at the world around.  Yang Xin listens to her sister and enthusiastically embraces the outside world.  Yet she never forgets to share what she has seen of the outside world with her sister.  She always says with a smile that she is her sister’s second pair of legs and second pair of eyes.  From this, Yang Xin becomes a glowing sun and Yang Lan becomes a bright white moon.  They both seem to belong in a different world and yet both share in each other’s joy.  Their strong friendship continues until they discover that they have both fallen in love with the same man.

The first time that Yang Xin encounters Yin Tong they were both on opposite sides.  This is because Hu Yong stole Yin Tong’s designs and Yang Xin and Hu Yong both know each other.  As a result, Yin Tong believes that Yang Xin and Hu Yong are partners in crime.  However, after their misunderstanding clears up, they both quickly drew toward each other.  Yang Xin’s careless words deeply touched Yin Tong.  Yet what he didn’t know is that the words coming from Yang Xin were actually spoken by Yang Lan.

Later, the reason for Yin Tong being close to Yang Xin is more or less because she has Yang Lan’s shadow behind her.  However aside from this, Yang Xin’s special characteristic is still able to attract Yin Tong.  She is lively and outgoing, but not frivolous and she is kindhearted.  The most important thing is that even though she doesn’t understand Yin Tong’s inner thoughts, but her brightness would always be able to comfort Yin Tong when he falls into the darkness.  It is because of this that Yin Tong did like Yang Xin before.  Until Yang Lan truly appears in front of him and he finds out that he and Yang Lan’s life are connected in many ways, only then did he let go of Yang Xin.

Yang Xin did not understand this at all but she is after all a kindhearted girl.  As a result, not only did she give her blessing to Yin Tong and her sister but she also gets into an argument over this with her mother, Pei Shan.  In the end, when Yin Tong decides to build a white house with Yang Lan, Yang Xin becomes his most helpful assistant again.

            Those people who know Lao Yin calls him a “pear lunatic.”  This is because he is a fanatic about growing pears.  He even tries all kinds of ways to try to improve the growing process in his own pear garden.  Even the specialist at the Agricultural Institute would show him some respect.   However, the market for pears has not been good for the past 20 years so having the nickname of “pear lunatic” also seems to be a bit of a ridicule.  People laugh at him but they don’t know that the pear garden holds his life’s ideals and passions.

During the 1970’s period, filled with many ideals, Yin Zhi Cheng and his good friend, Yang Shi Rong were the last batch of youths to head to the countryside.  After they both joined a production group, they fell in love with the same girl, Tong Lei.  When it comes to love, Lao Yin is shy and clumsy.  He knows that he can’t win against Shi Rong and so he keeps his feelings for Tong Lei to himself and didn’t confess to her how he feels.

He never expected that when the pear flower first blooms in March, Tong Lei would show up in his pear garden.  At that time, Tong Lei is already pregnant and comes to ask for Lao Yin’s help.  Even though Tong Lei clearly tells Lao Yin that she does not love him and that she is afraid one day she will leave him, he still agreed to get married with her so that she can give birth to Yin Tong with no worries on her mind.

            After the production group disbanded, Shi Rong left Song Jiang with other team members.  Lao Yin, who has fallen in love with the farm stayed behind and became a pear grower.

            Five years later, Tong Lei requests to leave and promises to let Yin Tong stay behind temporarily.  After she has settled down, she will come back to get Yin Tong.  However, many seasons come and go and Tong Lei never came back.  Lao Yin still quietly guards this pear garden and raises Yin Tong.

            Nowadays, Lao Yin is still like before, he can talk non-stop on the subject of pears and he is still clumsy on the topic of love.  In the eyes of his son, Yin Tong, Lao Yin is just a biased old man.  Lao Yin knows that Yin Tong has always misunderstood him on the incident of his mother’s departure many years ago.  It is also the reason which drove a wedge into their relationship 4 years ago.  Yet he has never told Yin Tong the truth about Tong Lei’s departure and never told him that he is not Lao Yin’s biological son.

            Lao Yin did not reveal the truth because first, he doesn’t want to hurt Yin Tong and second, he has already regarded Yin Tong as his biological son.  Later, also for the reason that he loves Yin Tong, when Yin Tong’s colleague comes to discuss the development of the pear garden with him, on the surface, Lao Yin appeared to be furious, but he later secretly went to the development company and agreed to give up the pear garden.  At this time, Lao Yin is startled to discover that the general manager of this development company is his old friend, Yang Shi Rong.

            Seeing each other again after so many years yet it seems like Shi Rong is coming after Lao Yin for debt and trying to take away the pear garden that Lao Yin has protected for so many years.  Shi Rong even deliberately uses Yin Tong to attack Lao Yin.  Lao Yin doesn’t dare reveal that Yin Tong is Shi Rong’s son and shoulders the burden of the torments himself.  However, what is even more shocking to him is that the girl whom Yin Tong likes, Yang Lan, turns out to be Shi Rong’s daughter!

            In order to prevent the tragedy of a love between brother and sister, Lao Yin orders Yin Tong to leave Yang Lan and yet he could not reveal the truth to him.  As a result of this, Yin Tong’s resentment for Lao Yin grows deeper.  The situation between father and son gets worse until Lao Yin and Yin Tong finds out the truth about Yin Tong’s identity.

            Lao Yin thought that the dream that he has been holding onto for 20 years is doomed forever.  He never expected that a song that a girl, Yan Tong, from the Qing Hai lakeside, sings would open up a window in his life that he has never opened before…

            Shi Rong used to be a person who has a sharp eye.  After he remarries to Fang Pei Shan, he becomes the general manager at Ba Fang Development Group.  He also learned clever skills from the business market and some skills are so clever that sometimes they are a bit heartless.     

            Actually, when he was young, he also held the same dream as Lao Yin and Tong Lei.  However, when he was pursuing Tong Lei many years ago and got rejected and after that she married Lao Yin, Shi Rong believes that Lao Yin deceived him.  As a result, he holds a grudge against Lao Yin.  After the production group disbanded, he left pear garden without any goodbyes and also left his young dream behind.

            Soon after, Shi Rong experienced a marriage with no love.  After his divorce, he takes a small Yang Lan and gets married to Fang Pei Shan.  He uses his own skills to help Ba Fang Development Group’s business become better and also to elevate his own career status.

            Shi Rong meets Yin Tong at the new architect convention that is sponsored by Ba Fang Development Group.  He finds out that Yin Tong is Lao Yin and Tong Lei’s son.  As a result, he indicates that he wants Yin Tong to be in charge of the development plan for the pear garden which triggers a succession of crisis that involves the two generations.  On the other hand, he finds out that Tong Lei has left Lao Yin a long time ago and so he secretly sends someone to investigate Tong Lei’s whereabouts now.  This causes Pei Shan to be extremely jealous and brings many troubles to the family.

            During this series of events, Shi Rong’s attitude has continued to be unpredictable.  Lao Yin believes that Shi Rong is set out for revenge, but actually Shi Rong is not.  The hatred that he has for Lao Yin has long disappeared.  The development plan for the pear garden is purely a business interest that his is considering.  As for Yin Tong, Shi Rong really seems to admire Yin Tong for his talents but he doesn’t approve of the emotional and romantic side of Yin Tong.  His investigation of Tong Lei’s whereabouts is also not understandable by others.  It seems to stem from his longing for Tong Lei and also seems to be for the benefit of Lao Yin and Yin Tong.  Or perhaps, he still hasn’t completely forgotten those cherish memories from his past?

            In short, the present day Shi Rong gets back into Lao Yin’s life again.  However, being in a high society and holding power in his hands, it only causes people to feel that he is profound and hard to understand.  No one knows for certain how he measures the weight between friendship and power.

            Many years ago, Pei Shan also used to be a member in the production group.  However, she was the first person to leave because she fell in love with Yang Shi Rong and the one that Shi Rong loved was Tong Lei.

            After many years of having a difficult life, she launched Ba Fang Development Group.  Under her leadership, Ba Fang expanded into a big company in a very short time.  This is mostly credited to her nimble skills in public relations.  The only thing left over from her first marriage is her daughter, Xiao Xin.  Her love only starts burning again after she reunites with Shi Rong.

            Having lost and then recovered her love causes Pei Shan to treasure it even more.  As a result, even though Pei Shan knows that Shi Rong still has Tong Lei in a part of his heart, she never minded one bit.  Because she has confidence in Shi Rong, she handed the authority of managing the company to him and she gradually steps down.  She is happy to be a housewife and henceforth, her husband and two daughters become the most important people in her life.  However, when she finds out that Shi Rong is secretly investigating Tong Lei’s whereabouts, she couldn’t help but feel jealous.  Having lost and then recovering her love, she couldn’t tolerate losing it again.

            This time, Pei Shan is determined to release her real power.  She will first advocate the pear garden development plan so as to thoroughly wipe away those feelings that Shi Rong has set aside for Tong Lei.  However her decision is met by opposition from both her daughters, especially Yang Lan.  She nearly used her fragile life to protect this piece of land.  As a result, Pei Shan hesitates.  To everyone’s surprise, Shi Rong decides to implement this development plan.  In Pei Shan’s eyes, his persistence appears to be possessed and causes them to be uncertain whether he is feeling love or hatred towards this piece of land.

            However, Pei Shan did not stop.  She is used to using power to search for all kinds of love in this world.  As a result, when she almost lost the three people most important to her in the end that’s when she suddenly stops and regrets all the things that she has done.

            She is Yin Tong’s mother.  A beautiful, generous and gentle but strong woman.  She is also a woman who would dare to bravely pursue love.

            In Lao Yin’s life, Tong Lei appears to be the same as the pear flower.  From the first, she is bright and glittering, but then she withers and then disappears.  The only thing left for Lao Yin is a shattered dream.  The many riddles that she has left behind after her death will be solved after her daughter, Xiao Tong (Yan Tong), appears some twenty years later at Lao Yin’s pear garden.

            It turns out that many years ago even though Tong Lei knew that Lao Yin and Shi Rong were both in love with her, she did not accept either one of them.  This is because she has already fallen in love with Yan Da Ge from the production group.  Yin Tong is her and Yan Da Ge’s son.  However, when Tong Lei finds out that she was pregnant, Yan Da Ge has already been transferred to a distant place with another production group.  Tong Lei goes to Lao Yin for help and gives birth to Yin Tong after their marriage.  Five years later, Tong Lei finds out that Yan Da Ge is in Qing Hai.  She chooses to be loyal to her own love and as a result, she leaves Lao Yin.  At Lao Yin’s request, she temporarily leaves Yin Tong with Lao Yin.  Soon after, she arrives in Qing Hai, gets married with Yan Da Ge and gives birth to Xiao Tong.  On the eve before she and her husband planned to go and get Yin Tong, they both met with an accident and passed away.  They were not able to see their son again. 

            Tong Lei has never deliberately concealed the truth about Yin Tong’s identity from Lao Yin.  However, Lao Yin is too much of a gentleman.  During the five years when he and Tong Lei were husband and wife, he has never asked her who Yin Tong’s biological father is which is the reason why the riddle remained unsolved for twenty or so years.

            Jun Xiang is an architect and also Yin Tong’s senior at school.  He is entrusted by Yang Xin to solicit Yin Tong to work at his office so that he can train Yin Tong to become an official architect.  However, his business is small and is always restrained by Ba Fang Development Group.  Unfortunately, Yin Tong has high ideals and often gets in conflict with Ba Fang Group’s interest for profits.  As a result, Ba Fang Group gave Jun Xiang lots of pressure and Jun Xiang silently took the burden of all of that without mentioning a word to Yin Tong.

            Actually, Yin Tong understands Jun Xiang’s responsibility and protection and keeps his gratitude for Jun Xiang in his heart.  Later, it is because of Jun Xiang’s friendship that Yin Tong wanted to quit his job after several conflicts with the development company but he couldn’t bring himself to tell Jun Xiang.  It is also because of this friendship that when he discovers that Jun Xiang likes Yang Xin and Yang Xin’s heart is turned toward himself that he feels guilty and ashamed toward Jun Xiang.

            Jun Xiang and Yang Xin knew each other from very early on and they are constantly bickering with each other.  Yang Xin likes to tease the good natured Jun Xiang but he doesn’t get pestered by it.  On the contrary, he gets amused by Yang Xin’s liveliness.  Perhaps they are both used to their bickering and so Yang Xin have always regarded Jun Xiang as a good buddy and have never thought about becoming a couple with him.  After Yang Xin falls in love with Yin Tong, Jun Xiang becomes the person who she will grumble and complain to.  This being the case, it becomes even more difficult for Jun Xiang to confess his feelings to Yang Xin.  Until one day, when Jun Xiang finally gathers up his courage and expresses his true feeling to Yang Xin.  She was shocked at first and then she scolds him.  Although Jun Xiang was disappointed but he didn’t complain or have any regrets.  Later, because he acted as if nothing happened, they both quickly went back to their pass friendship.

            Of course, Jun Xiang hasn’t forgotten his feelings for Yang Xin.  It’s just that he chooses to continue to be the protector by her side.  However, he never expected that one day Yang Xin would discover that she also likes him.

            He is the pear specialist at the Agricultural Institute.  He dedicated his whole life to agricultural development.  He lives a carefree and comfortable lifestyle. 

            He gets acquainted with Lao Yin because of his pear research and counseling work.  He admires and respects Lao Yin’s experience with pears and they both became good friends.  For many years, he has seen the dispute between Lao Yin and his son Yin Tong and he has felt wronged for Lao Yin.

(portrayed by Zhu Li) – 7 years old.

            The daughter of Tong Lei and her lover, Yan Da Ge and is also Yin Tong’s younger sister.  She is naïve and loved by others.

            After the death of her parents, Xiao Tong is raised by the elders on the farm.  She has always remembered that her parents had mentioned before their death that she has an older brother.  However, she doesn’t know where to look for him.  Until one day, she accidentally saves a wandering artist, Jie Mi / Jamii.  The song that her mother left was exposed on air to the public and that’s what started her journey in search for her brother.  This year, when the pear flowers start blooming in March, she finally arrives at Lao Yin’s pear garden with her mother’s diary.  At that time, Yin Tong gets caught up in all the confusion because of the misunderstanding with his identity.  Her appearance just happens to help Yin Tong to clear up any confusion.

            A well-known international American musician with great talent.  Occasionally, he would be an entertainer roaming around places.  While gathering music in a tranquil village in China’s Qing Hai, he gets lost due to a sudden change in the weather.  He got sick and lost consciousness.  During the time when he is half asleep and half awake, he only remembers seeing a young girl’s delicate face.  Until he recovers and wakes up, he discovers that the young girl who saved him is no where to be seen.  However, the melody that the young girl was humming continues to run through his head.

            The girl who saved him is Xiao Tong.  Their short destiny together is something that is not easily forgotten in Jie Mi’s memory.  He wants to find the owner of this song and he wants to find this girl.  Yet he never imagined that this song is like a key and opens up the riddle to this whole story.  It opens up Xiao Tong’s journey in search for her brother and opens up the secret to Yin Tong’s identity.  It also opens up the dream that Lao Yin has kept locked away…
