On a raining day in Taipei, I’m sitting in a luxurious Benz and looking out the window. Suddenly, I remember how my arms used to be tightly hugging Frank, how the two of us shared one raincoat and driving quickly through the big and small allies on a broken motorcycle. It was a beautiful time. So… that is happiness. It is what we have been searching for all along, yet we have already had it… Frank, whose given name is Cai Jin Lai, his 24 year old life can be summed up as nothing accomplished. Every day, he daydreams about himself being the great master of a wealthy enterprise. He hopes that he has millions of dollars and yet he never does anything realistic to make that dream come true. Like many of the rest of the young people nowadays, he is a slave of the credit card. What is even more unthinkable is that he would go and borrow money from the loan sharks in order to spend it on chasing girls. As expected, after spending all the money in a couple of days, he falls into the fires of hell. The loan sharks start to chase after him for money. Having trouble even feeding himself, he doesn’t have any money to return to the loan sharks. Each day, he drinks water to keep himself full. The loan sharks even threaten Frank that if he doesn’t return the money, they will break his arms and legs. Frank hides at home and refuses to come out. Unexpectedly, on a certain morning, he is brought back to the real world from a dream of mansions and beautiful women by two guys who broke down his door to chase him to return the money he owes. No matter how Frank begs for mercy, the two guys will not show leniency and is determined to teach Frank a lesson. However, not everyone is as worse off as Frank. There are many news articles which have reports of all trades and occupations where guys the same age as Frank use their skillful brains to make millions of dollars of income. Additionally, there are others who are not as skillful but who are very hardworking. Although they come from an ordinary background and are not very wealthy, but they work harder and are more optimistic than the average person. The 25 year old Zeng Shan Mei would fall into the latter category. During the day, she works at the customer service department in a bank and in the evening, aside from going to work as a janitor at a department store, she would also work around doing other jobs irregularly to earn money. Working three jobs, aside from supporting her retired parents, her unemployed brother and sister-in-law, her nephew who is in elementary school, she would also regularly send money each month to her boyfriend who is studying for his master’s degree in Hang Zhou. Her good friend Ling Long scolds Shan Mei for being stupid and not saving any money for herself. However, Shan Mei actually gladly endures this hardship. She dreams of the day when she will get married with her boyfriend after he graduates. Finally, she waited to the day when her boyfriend will be graduating soon. Regardless of her family and her friends’ opposition, Shan Mei is determined to leave home for her love. She prepares to quit her job and head off to Hang Zhou to get married with her boyfriend. On the last day of work, Shan Mei goes to the bank as energetic as usual and also calls customers to chase them to pay their debts as usual. Unexpectedly she overhears the two guys threatening Frank when she calls him. Shan Mei is frightened and calls the police. She manages to save Frank, who has his hands tied and almost drowned in the bathtub. As for this dramatic and ridiculous encounter, it will be the beginning of a series of disasters waiting for them in the future… translated by mandy |
